10 Sure-Fire Tips to Keep E-Bikes & E-Scooters Safe

10 Sure-Fire Tips to Keep E-Bikes & E-Scooters Safe

Electric bikes and scooters have shot up in popularity in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. They’re a relatively eco-friendly mode of transport that allows you to get around much faster than walking. Electric bikes can make exercise less strenuous and more accessible, while electric scooters take physical effort out of the equation completely.

But they don’t come without their risks. In this post, we’ll discuss how to make sure you’re using your e-bike or e-scooter safely – and how to keep it safe from thieves.

Fire safety with e-bikes and e-scooters

The main safety concerns from e-bikes and e-scooters comes from their lithium-ion batteries. If they’re faulty or not used correctly, they can catch fire or even explode. Here are our tips to avoid that happening…

1. Buy the right products

To start with, you should only purchase batteries, devices and chargers that are approved and labelled by a nationally recognised testing lab.

2. Use them properly

When using your lithium-ion batteries, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and only use the batteries, chargers and devices that came with one another.

3. Charging safely

To avoid overloading circuits, you should only charge one battery or device at a time. Keep batteries between 0°C and 40°C when charging and unplug them as soon as they’re fully charged.

4. Responsible storage

Batteries should be stored safely away from children, liquids, hot temperatures and direct sunlight. Along with your e-bike or e-scooter, they should be kept away from anything that could get hot or catch fire.

5. Check your alarms

If a fire does break out, you’ll want to know about it quickly to minimise damage. Make sure you have the right type of fire alarms in the correct positions throughout your property.

6. Don’t cut corners with repairs

If your bike needs to be repaired, don’t take any chances. Only use qualified professionals, and definitely don’t attempt DIY repairs.

7. Safe disposal

Finally, if you need to dispose of your lithium-ion battery, don’t put it in your general waste. Take them to your local recycling centre or contact your local waste department to find out where you should take them.

What about security?

No guide to e-bike and e-scooter safety would be complete without some measures to keep your mode of transport safe from thieves and vandals…

8.  Keep it locked

Avoid leaving your bike or scooter unattended at any time. If you have to do so, make sure it’s fixed to something sturdy using a good quality lock.

9.  Don’t put them on show

Never leave your bike or scooter on show, such as near a window. Given their high value, they can be enough to persuade opportunist burglars to break into your home.

10. Use cameras for added protection

CCTV cameras are a great way to deter thieves from trying anything. When leaving your bike or scooter outside shops or offices, find a spot in full view of a camera. For extra protection, it’s well worth getting your own surveillance cameras at home too.
