3 Summer Security Tips to Keep Your Property Safe
by Mark Radford
Summer is just around the corner. That means hotter temperatures, school holidays and the busiest season for the island of Bermuda. Within all of that, it’s easy to forget about the security of your property.
In this post, we’ll list three simple summer security tips to make sure your property is safe from June to September.
1. Lock windows and doors
With average temperatures rising above 25°C from June to September, staying cool is top of the list for most Bermudians throughout the summer months. For many, this means leaving doors and windows open so that cool breeze can get inside your home or office.
While this is all well and good when those doors and windows are nearby, it’s not so secure if they’re out of sight. Leaving doors and windows open or unlocked when you’re in the garden or at the other side of your house could leave you and your property at risk.
That’s especially true when you’re away from your home or office altogether. Whether you’re heading out for the day or just popping to the shop, it’s vital that you secure all windows and doors before leaving your property.
2. Secure air conditioning
If you don’t want to rely on ventilation alone to keep your property cool in the heat, air conditioners are the logical solution. Window air conditioners are one of the most popular options because they don’t take up floor space and can directly exhaust excess heat outside.
That said, they do pose their own security risk if they’re not installed properly. Window air conditioning units that are insecure can be easily removed allowing access to your property through the window – not to mention an easy theft of the AC unit itself.
If you’re using a window air conditioner, make sure it sits securely in the window with a robust support bracket if necessary.
3. Make plans for holidays
Plan ahead’ is the classic advice if you want to get the best deal for a summer getaway. But planning is also important when it comes to security while you’re away. Simply leaving your property unoccupied for a fortnight, week or long weekend could attract attention from opportunist burglars.
Ask a relative, friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your house while you’re away. You can even give them a spare key so they can stop by on a daily basis. This will reduce the chances of someone noticing you’re not home as well as providing a bit more peace of mind.
If you want to go the extra mile, CCTV cameras can provide complete assurance that your home or office is A-OK. With a smart surveillance camera in place, you can get alerts whenever motion is detected at your property. Or simply access a live stream of the camera to check in whenever you want.
