5 Smart Home Trends for 2019

Smart phones, smart watches and now smart homes. Yes, our homes are the latest thing to be innovated and improved by smart technology. There are now all kinds of ways to make your home safer, easier to run and more efficient.

As more people realise the benefits, it’s inevitable that certain kinds of smart technology will become commonplace. In this post, we clear up what is meant by a smart home and look at 5 smart home trends for 2019.

What is a smart home?

Smart lighting is a great starting point for people wanting to try out smart home technology. You can have your lights set to a timer, control them through an app or even link them to your own voice assistant. That includes different levels of lighting, so you can choose between more than just ‘on’ and ‘off’.

Smart home lighting will continue to rise in popularity in 2019 because it offers more than just convenience. The ability to have lights turning on and off when you’re away from home is a huge deterrent for opportunist burglars, who will get the impression that someone is home or at least visiting.

1. Lighting

Surveillance cameras are the best way to deter criminals. They show that, if anyone tries anything, the camera will be watching – and it will only be a matter of time before they’re caught. Needless to say, it also makes it much easier to catch culprits should they go ahead with a burglary.

The new year is the perfect time to equip your property with a state-of-the-art video surveillance system. You’ll get peace of mind throughout 2019 and long into the future, with no worries about breaking your resolution come the end of January.

2. Leak Detection

The same is true for leak detectors, which alert you when water is detected where it really shouldn’t be. This allows you to deal with the broken appliance or burst pipe, rather than continuing your day unaware that your property is flooding.

Heading into 2019, we’re expecting to see a lot of property owners investing in smart leak detection – partly because of how affordable it is considering the saving in damages.

3. Fridges

Now onto the more frivolous of the trends – the smart fridge. Smart fridges have a range of innovative features to make life easier for homeowners, including:

  • See through doors allowing you to see groceries without opening the fridge
  • Doors which open as you approach
  • Smart drawers which remain frost-free
  • Interior cameras which can be viewed through your smartphone, so you’re no longer unsure what you need to buy while you’re out
  • Interactive touch screens for communicating, pinning notes and even watching films

4. Cameras

If you’re looking for something more useful, smart cameras might be the smart home trend for you. High definition cameras can be installed anywhere in your home, which send an alert to your smartphone when motion is detected.

Depending on the model you choose, the smart camera can even use facial recognition to tell you when certain people have arrived home – or alert you to an unrecognised visitor with footage.

5. Doorbells

Similar to a smart camera, a smart doorbell allows you to see who is at your door from your smartphone, with a range of innovative security features:

  • Get alerts when somebody rings the doorbell
  • See live footage from your front door
  • Hear and speak to visitors
  • Record video remotely to watch back at any time
  • Get alerts even when visitors don’t press, using motion sensors
