4 Ways to Stop the Grinch Stealing Your Christmas
Whether it’s the 2018 animation with Benedict Cumberbatch, the 2000 classic starring Jim Carrey or even the original 1966 TV special, the Grinch is one of the best-loved Christmas films across the world.
Most people will agree that there’s nothing worse than the thought of waking up at Christmas to find that someone has taken all the presents!
While real-life Bermuda might not have a cynical green recluse on the lookout to spoil the festivities (before a heart-warming epiphany), it does have some grinch-like characters on the lookout for an easy smash and grab.
In this post, we’ll list four simple ways to stop the ‘Grinch’ stealing your Christmas.
1. Always lock up
In an attempt to mimic Santa himself, the Grinch enters houses through the chimney, before wreaking havoc on the presents, the tree and even the food. Thankfully, this method of entry is unlikely at your home – but there are plenty of others that you’ll need to be aware of.
A determined burglar will check all doors and windows to find an easy way into your home. With that in mind, you should make sure they’re all securely locked.
If you’re concerned about burglars trying doors, a simple trick is to leave a mug on the inside handle. Any attempt to open the door will see the mug fall and break, giving you an early warning about their intentions.
2. Intruder alarms
While mugs are okay as a DIY trick, the best way to detect burglars is with an intruder alarm. Connected to all the entry points of your home, it will sound whenever a break-in is detected.
Intruder alarms range from basic set-ups which alert you or your neighbours, to more advanced systems which can also notify you on your phone if you’re away. Whatever the case, the mere sight of an intruder alarm is enough to deter most burglars.
You can also opt for motion sensors which are triggered by movement within your home whenever the alarm is set. Even the Grinch would be caught out by that one!
3. Surveillance cameras
There were undoubtedly plenty of cameras around to catch Jim Carrey’s antics at the turn of the millennium. What the Who household didn’t have was CCTV to catch his character in the act.
Surveillance cameras are another effective way to deter burglars by letting them know that their activity is being monitored. A UK study found that crime decreased by 13% in places with CCTV.
On top of that, any crime that does take place is more likely to be resolved when you have footage of the criminal, their face or their vehicle.
4. Stay alert
Even with all of these security measures in place, it’s important to act responsibly if you want to stop your house becoming a target. Remember that burglars attempt break-ins at Christmas because they know most houses have plenty of expensive presents inside.
You can reduce the risk of your house being targeted by keeping presents out of sight from windows. Try to avoid posting on social media about your Christmas shopping or plans too, so you don’t give out any clues about the contents of your home or the days you’ll be out.
Don't give the Grinch a chance
While the Grinch ultimately returns the presents and apologises, there’s no chance of a burglar showing the same remorse. With Selectron, you can make sure they don’t have a chance, with state-of-the-art intruder alarms and surveillance cameras for homes across Bermuda.
