4 in 10 Businesses Want Mobile Access Control

Mobile phones have become an essential part of our everyday lives. They allow us to stay connected, check the news, pay our bills and so much more – including access control. The latter is becoming particularly popular, with just over 4 in 10 businesses saying it’s a feature they would look out for in an access control system.

So, what is mobile access control and why is it becoming so popular? Read on as we take a closer look.

What is mobile access control?

As its name suggests, mobile access control refers to the use of mobile devices to manage access at a commercial premises. That could be access to the premises as a whole or specific areas or rooms.

Mobile access control typically works through an app on your mobile. Users log in to the app then connect their phone to the access system using NFC technology (or similar). They are then granted access – or they’re denied it if it’s an area they aren’t permitted to enter.

Rising in popularity

If you think mobile access control sounds handy, you’re not alone. A recent survey for The 2022 State of Physical Access Control Report found that 42% of businesses are thinking about adopting a mobile-ready access control system – and almost a quarter (24%) have already done so.

Mobile access was also listed as one of the top three features people would look for in a new access control system, with 41% of respondents keen on it – beaten only by contactless capabilities at 43%.

It’s also seen as a major factor in the coming years of access control technology. More than half of respondents (51%) said that mobile access and apps would shape the access control industry. Also among the responses were:

  • Contactless (44%)
  • Smart buildings (44%)
  • Cloud hosting (38%)
  • Biometrics (35%)

3 benefits of mobile access control

Access control has a number of benefits on its own, such as a security, accountability and peace of mind. But there are a few reasons why the mobile variety, in particular, is becoming more popular.

Convenience

Firstly, there’s the convenience of being able to access areas with your mobile phone. As mentioned above, this is something that everyone has on their person at all times nowadays. While you might misplace a fob or card, the same is less likely to happen with your phone.

Hygiene

Using a phone for access is also more hygienic. There’s no need to touch anything you haven’t already touched – in other words, your phone – meaning there’s less chance of germs being transferred from keypads or call buttons.

Speed

Finally, there’s speed. It’s much easier to provide access to new members of staff of visitors using a mobile access control system. There’s no need for new fobs or cards to be made. That also makes it quicker and easier to revoke access if needed.
