How to Reduce False Alarms on Your CCTV
Whether at home or in a commercial building, false alarms on CCTV are incredibly frustrating. They can cause unnecessary panic not to mention wasting your time checking your cameras to make sure everything’s okay.
Read on for five ways you can reduce the likelihood of false alarms on your CCTV cameras.
Position your camera properly
When a motion detector works the way it should, it is extremely sensitive to any type of movement. But this can also set off a false alarm easily without the right positioning, including:
- The movement of trees on a windy day
- Pets or other animals passing by
- People walking on the street outside your property
- Shadows or lights from passing traffic
As you can imagine, this provides ample opportunities for your cameras to detect movement and worry you unnecessarily. To minimise the chance of false alarms, make sure that your cameras are in areas without obstructions and movable objects.
Adjust the sensitivity level of the camera
To save you from having to react to constant alarms every time someone walks past the gate, you can also adjust camera levels for sensitivity. For example, use the sensors that don’t activate with lighter objects (animals) and the system will only alert you when a real intrusion is detected.
Change the batteries
Simple to do but easy to forget, changing batteries that are about to run out can stop a false alarm from being set off. Of course, this is only required for alarms that aren’t hard-wired.
Check your volumetric detectors
Volumetric detectors (or audio detectors) need to be calibrated correctly to avoid false positives. Their job is to activate the camera and alarm system once sound is detected. As you can imagine, if it’s not set properly, the alarm could go off at every single bark of a dog two streets away. The system allows you to finely adjust the sensitivity to your preference.
Keep up with regular camera maintenance
Keeping your cameras clean is a great way to reduce false alarms. Regularly clean cobwebs, dust and dirt from the camera screen to ensure that it’s always in full working order.
Utilise line crossing detection
If there’s any recurring issue in modern life, you can be sure technology will find a way to fix it. With false alarms on CCTV, that solution is line crossing detection.
Rather than monitoring the entire area covered by your cameras, you can set specific areas or thresholds of interest. When people or vehicles cross those thresholds or enter those areas, it will trigger the cameras to record their movements or send an alert to you.
