The Best Places to Hide a Security Camera at Home

There are plenty of good reasons to install home security cameras in plain sight. Visible CCTV cameras can act as a deterrent for burglary, vandalism, vehicle theft and more.

However, sometimes security cameras that criminals can’t see can be hugely useful, too. How can you ensure your camera goes unnoticed and gets the job done? Read on to learn where to position your cameras in and around your home for maximum effect.

Hiding a security camera outdoors

Foliage – real or fake – is a classic way to hide a security camera. Climbing plants along the side of a home can be particularly effective in concealing cameras. However, ensuring that leaves or flowers aren’t blocking your camera’s view can be tricky.

The shadows of a home’s eaves can also be very helpful, particularly if you opt for a smaller camera.

A more complex method is to hide your security cameras inside objects such as false pipes or vents. This can be hard to do if you want a camera up high to cover a wide area, which is why fake birdhouses are sometimes used.

Lastly, you can consider placing your security camera high up on the inside of a window, looking outward. Doing so can make your camera less noticeable – but it can also introduce the problem of glare on the window glass.

Hiding a security camera indoors

As with outdoor cameras, you’ll typically want an indoor security camera to be relatively high up so it can view more space. In fact, plants can also be a handy way to disguise indoor CCTV cameras as well. But there are plenty more options.

A common approach is to place the camera on a high shelf and disguise it using a false or hollowed-out object such as a tissue box, fake book or sculpture. However, some people prefer to use the ready-made disguise of cabinets. A small hole in the cabinet door can allow your security camera to still do its job.

Where not to place your hidden security cameras

It’s advisable to keep your indoor security cameras to common areas like hallways or the living room. Hidden cameras shouldn’t be placed in a private location like a bedroom or bathroom.

Similarly, exterior security cameras should avoid recording neighbouring property.

The issue of filming people without their consent is a legal grey area. It’s best to get permission to record guests, employees and residents inside your home.
