Bermuda Police Report – 11 Burglaries in Past 2 Months

In general, Bermuda is seen as a safe place to live and visit. Crime has historically been in low numbers and citizens have felt safe in their neighbourhoods. But recently there has been a spike in burglaries on the island. Read on as we take a closer look and discuss how to stay protected.

Increase in break-ins

Over a 2-month period, there were 11 reported burglaries for local businesses in Bermuda. Service stations, grocery stores, jewellery and electronic outlets were all targeted, mostly between 3am and 5:30am. Items stolen included jewellery, cigarettes, cash and electronic devices such as Apple products and JBL earbuds.

The Bermuda Police Service spokesman reported that all the burglaries were being investigated and that they couldn’t rule out that the thefts were all connected. The police are now advising households and businesses to make sure that their security systems are working properly.

How are the police helping?

Encouraging citizens to report suspicious persons and activity in their neighbourhoods is a large part of Bermuda Police Service’s community involvement. They advise the public on important information including:

  • Explaining what constitutes an offence – for example, receiving/handling suspected stolen goods either knowingly or otherwise.
  • Advising businesses not to leave large amounts of cash on the property.
  • Requesting information they have on burglaries – citizens are advised to contact the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744 or emailing 211@bps.bm.

How to stay protected

No property is completely protected from theft 100% of the time. But there are certain things you can do to reduce the risk of your home or business getting burgled. Top tips include:

1. Invest in a high-quality security system

You will never regret investing in a CCTV camera and alarm system for your property. With 60% of burglars avoiding houses that have alarms, they’re clearly an excellent deterrent. Video surveillance adds to that, letting any potential intruders know that their criminal activity is being recorded.

Once installed, regularly check that your security system is working – cameras need to be aimed in the right direction and alarms should be connected and switched on.

2. Get involved in your community

You don’t have to be part of neighbourhood watch to help your community. Being watchful for suspicious activity and reporting activity to the police will contribute to a safer community for everyone.

3. Review your businesses security procedures

If staff are vigilant and adhere to security procedures, you have a better chance of deterring theft. Certain things you can implement to encourage this include:

  • Reporting suspicious persons and activity to management.
  • Controlling access to your site, including visitors and tradespeople.
  • Regular checks of the premises carried out:
  • Doors and windows are secure.
  • Proper locks are used.
  • Security glass is installed.
  • Valuables are kept in secure lock boxes and safes.
