How to Create an Effective Fire Safety Plan

How to Create an Effective Fire Safety Plan

Whether you own a business or just live with a family, it’s important to consider fire safety. There are two main parts to a fire safety plan: preventing a fire, and getting people to safety if a fire occurs.

Both of these should be taught to new employees when they start, or taught to household members, especially children. As well as these points, you should consider how a fire would be contained and extinguished. Here are the key features of an effective fire safety plan.

Fire prevention

Know the hazards

You should make a list of all of the hazards on your property, and ensure that you have the appropriate fire safety equipment to handle them. For example, if your household or business has a gas hob, you should have a fire blanket and a dry powder extinguisher nearby, and the room it is in should ideally have a fireproof door and a fire alarm.

Regular maintenance

Every single piece of fire safety equipment that you own should be regularly checked. You should also regularly PAT test electrical devices to ensure they are safe to use, and fire doors should be checked for damage. Any faults should be reported and acted on as soon as possible – the last thing you want is a fire to occur while fixing the equipment is put off.

Named fire safety person

In a business, you should have a formally named fire safety marshal who is trained to regularly check fire safety measures. At home, it’s worth agreeing on who will take care of this, just so it definitely gets done.

Evacuation

Clear exit routes

All of your employees or household members should be aware of exit routes, which should be kept as short as possible and not use any elevators. If possible, these routes should have emergency lighting to help everyone evacuate safely.

Special arrangements

If you have children, or employees or family members with mobility issues, these people will likely need help evacuating in case of emergency. Each of these people should have a personalised plan for escaping a fire, including who should be responsible for helping them, if necessary.

A safe meeting point

Once everyone has left the building, you need a safe place for everyone to gather. This makes it much easier to tell if anyone is still trapped inside. For businesses, this is often in a car park. For homes, this could be across the street or the end of your drive.

Alarms

Alarms are often the difference between escaping a fire and not making it out on time. They provide a vital warning, particularly in large buildings or places where people sleep. Ensure that your home or business has an appropriate alarm that can be heard in every room, and that you test it regularly.
