The Impact of Hurricanes on Security Systems in Bermuda

As a tropical island, Bermuda is vulnerable to extreme weather. While our size means that hurricanes do not often make landfall, tropical cyclones devastate the island roughly twice every decade. When this happens, almost everything is impacted, and security systems are no different. Read on to find out more about how your security system may be affected in a storm, along with what we can do to protect it.

Blackouts

Electrical wires are often damaged by hurricanes. Our electricity grid is made up of miles of fragile wiring and it only takes one segment to be broken for whole streets to be without power. Many security systems require power in order to run, so blackouts render them unusable.

In order to keep your security system up and running during a power outage, you can use batteries or backup generators to ensure that you are still protected. You should also ensure that any external wires leading to surveillance cameras in your home or business are tucked away safely, so that they are not vulnerable to weather damage.

Loss of equipment

With high winds and potential flooding, hurricanes can rip your security equipment, even screw-mounted equipment, out of its place. This can cause you to lose it entirely or find it damaged elsewhere.

You may choose to bring any outdoor equipment inside during a storm. However, you can also be mindful of our hurricane vulnerability when placing outdoor equipment, choosing sheltered areas whenever possible. This way, it is shielded if you cannot remove it before a storm hits.

Scrambled video

You may be tempted to leave your surveillance cameras running during a hurricane. With increased risk of looting and potential need for evidence for insurance claims, having video footage may be useful. However, high winds combined with rain make it difficult for cameras to obtain any useful footage during a storm.

Confused alarms

Between the scrambled cameras and vibration from the wind, many alarms and notifications can misfire during a storm. While some people find that leaving alarms on during a hurricane gives them peace of mind, be aware that they may set off accidentally. As a result, many people choose to deactivate alarms during a storm.

Danger detection

If you have any leak detectors in your home or commercial property, these come in useful during a storm. Not only will these serve their usual purpose of warning you of any burst pipes, leak detectors can also inform you of any punctures to the building allowing rain inside. Your fire alarm and carbon monoxide alarm are also important – fires and gas leaks are often caused by property damage or improper use of generators and stoves. As soon as you receive a warning of a potential hurricane, you should test these sensors to ensure that they can help you.
