Summer Security for Commercial Properties: 4 Top Tips
Commercial security is important year round. However, the summer months bring specific challenges.
These include the threat of extreme weather and heightened security risks. These can be posed by changes to the workforce due to holiday absences, including hiring temporary staff. So, here are some tips for keeping your commercial premises secure during the summer.
1. Prepare for hurricane season
Bermuda’s hurricane season stretches from June to November. While – fortunately – direct hits on the island are rare, there have been several close calls in recent years. Even if they are not destructive, weather events can result in heavy wind and rain, with some properties losing power.
Consider a back-up power source for your commercial security system and ensure your doors and windows fit tightly. This is to prevent high winds triggering your intruder alarm. You might also wish to install a leak detection system. If your premises do experience an adverse weather event, it is a good idea to get your security equipment checked for damage.
2. Be mindful of increased crime risk
Summer brings more people to the island, so be aware that there could be a heightened risk of crime. This risk is increased by the fact that you could have fewer staff members on-site to keep an eye on things. So, take steps to keep your premises secure.
If you haven’t yet installed an intruder alarm, CCTV cameras or a surveillance system, this is certainly something to consider. Not only do surveillance systems keep you aware of what’s going on but the mere sight of security cameras on the exterior of a building can be enough to deter would-be criminals.
3. Secure empty premises
Over the summer, your premises might be empty or have fewer people on-site. Make sure your alarm and surveillance systems are activated. Modern cloud-based systems offer remote monitoring, so you can stream your CCTV camera footage and receive alerts via a mobile device – even when you’re on the beach!
Also during the summer months, when there are lots of distractions and absences, things like testing your fire alarms might be neglected. Make sure you keep to your schedule of weekly testing to ensure your system remains fully functional.
4. Train temporary staff
If you take on temporary summer staff, make sure they are aware of – and implement – the appropriate security measures. This might be as simple as ensuring doors are properly secured to prevent unauthorised persons getting onto the premises. Conversely, limit who has access to your security and IT systems to those who need access to carry out their work.
Keep a written record of any swipe cards or other access passes issued and when the staff members leave your employment, make sure they are all returned. Any time your organisation undergoes a change of personnel, it’s good practice to update building entry codes and passwords to keep your premises secure.
